Although Northern Ireland is part of the UK, when it comes to horseracing it is governed by horse Racing Ireland and has two racecourses which form an essential part of the notable Irish history and culture of horseracing. The two courses are the Down Royal in Lisburn and Downpatrick, situated by the ancient town of the same name.

There are many historic attractions in the town, most notably Down Cathedral, but with a history in horseracing spanning over three centuries, Downpatrick racing is the main attraction which most typifies the cultural history and modern appeal of the town for race fans.
Such is the esteem with which Downpatrick is held locally that there is a supporters group and, unusual amongst racecourses, all races are sponsored. Certainly the long history of racing in the town is a factor in its enduring local appeal and race days continue to be strong social and sporting events in the town. A friendly atmosphere is the result and a warm welcome is extended to the many visitors to the town who wish to take in some quality Downpatrick racing and enjoy the excellent hospitality on offer.

A fun day at the races is nothing without some high quality racing and Downpatrick provides that too, in abundance. A notable venue in the National Hunt season, the track is an oval of 1 1/4 miles which has tight turns and an undulating surface providing plenty of tough challenges for horses and riders. The finishing furlong is uphill too and provides for some thrilling ends to races.

The quality of the course is shown by competitors such as Rhyme n' Reason who went on to win the Grand National and Rathgorman, Sparky Gale and Tourist Attraction who first tasted success at Downpatrick before their wins at Cheltenham. A place for potential champions to cut their teeth, Downpatrick racing promises the best and consistently delivers. With excellent hospitality options to match, the popularity of the course is easy to understand.
A day enjoying Downpatrick racing need not break the bank. Admission is just £10 with concessions of £5 available to OAPs and students. Further savings for regular racegoers may be had by purchasing an annual membership for £75 or £50 concession price, which allows for entry into 10 events over the course of the season with complimentary racecards and member’s newsletters.

Groups of 10 or more can also benefit from a Punter's Package which includes admission, a beef roll, drink voucher, racecard and £5 voucher for betting. The Punter's Package costs £20 per person.
Corporate hospitality is a strong feature of most racecourses in modern times and this is certainly true of Downpatrick. The new hospitality suite which can cater for up to 450 people is ideal for a conference or private function at any time and during race days Corporate Packages are available which combine superb race views with four course luncheon and access to a private bar and tote betting outlet.

These packages cost £30 per head and include the services of a guest tipster to add to the sense of occasion and fun of the races. A private box represents the pinnacle of race day style, luxury, and hospitality for groups of between 10 and 20 persons.
There are plenty of betting, drinks and food options for all racegoers in the Grandstand including the Main Bar and adjacent Toals Bookmakers.
Two further bars and outlets for hot food and sandwiches are on site while the betting ring comprises representatives from all the best known Irish bookmakers. Enjoy the facilities, the atmosphere and the superb sporting spectacle of Downpatrick racing.
